Do more than add photo effects on iOS (Albuquerque Journal)

I've written about several iOS apps here that add effects to your photos, but
most are just for adding a retro look, tuning your images, or making a photo
look hip for the social networking sites. I've found some great ones like
PhotoToaster, Photogene2, and SnapSeed, but there's another genre of apps that
make even more drastic changes to your images.
This week's collection of iOS apps is about taking your photos to the extreme.
The first turns your images into line-drawn cartoons. The second fills in your
image with words to produce a thought-provoking effect. The third puts your
image through a coffee grinder, and brews up a bubbly colorful mosaic.
Once in the painting phase, you can choose colors, paint them in yourself, or
have the app do it for you.

tons of tuning options to make them look just how you want. You start by

What would you suggest for a child's mosaic craft?
I'm planning a craft for several children, mostly boys, ages 9-11. I'm thinking of a mosaic, and wondering what pieces they could glue onto what surface? I need this to be an economical craft, using supplies that are easy to find.
At my son's school, they make mosaics out of glue, tissue paper and wax paper.
You start with a sheet of wax paper as the background.
Wet it lightly.
Thin white glue and apply it with a paintbrush to the tissue paper (these can be cut or torn to shape).
Once glued, attach it to the tissue paper and put more glue on top of it.
You can add another layer of wax paper over the entire project when done or just leave it as it. If you add another sheet of wax paper, it will dull the colors.
If you want, you can make a paper frame using construction paper.
These mosaics and be inserted into cards or made into nice pictures, it just depends on what size you make. They are really pretty. Some children make very elaborate scenes of fire, clouds, trees and such. Others just make modern art. It's cute to see what they come up with.
