Murano bracelets paint the true story of beads, from their history, to different techniques for making beads, to the contemporary way glass artists are treating beads to make glorious Murano glass bracelets.
Glass Beads are the oldest way people were forming glass. Invented thousands of years ago, beads were, and still are, popular adornment of ladies and gentlemen all over the world, from Masai in Africa, to Hopi in North America. Dayak tribe in Borneo is famous for magnificent decorative pieces that are part of their traditional costume, and have been for centuries. Glass Bead necklaces and bracelets were often made by a few skilled people in each tribe, and were part of a family heirloom, passed on as a treasure from one family member to another.
Although a few techniques for making glass beads originate in the ancient Egypt, we have to thank to the glass artists of Murano, a small island near Venice, in Italy, for the variety and magnificence of contemporary glass beads. They invented most of glass making techniques used today, incorporating tradition, exceptional skill and artistic flair in each piece of glass that comes out of Murano.
The most beautiful Murano bracelets are made from a combination of beads of different color, shape, form and size. There are several major types of beads that are used for making murano bracelets, most of them the same today as they were hundreds of years ago.
Seed beads
Tiny seed beads are the major part of almost all murano bracelets. They are made from very thin hollow glass tubes. The tubes are cut into very tiny pieces and then heated up to add color and smooth the edges. In the old times, making murano glass bracelets made of beads in Murano was the job of women. All other steps in the glass making were taken by men.
Rosetta or Chevron beads
Invented in Murano in the 14th century, Rosetta beads are made much like seed beads, from very thin hollow glass canes. The Rosetta canes were made of six layers of glass of different colors. After they were cut, the beads were strung into a pattern of 5 concentric circles with twelve points.
Millefiori beads
Millefiori or 'thousands flowers' beads are made by fusing glass canes of different colors. After they cooled off, the fused canes were cut into fine segments, each with a colorful flower in a cross-section. Millefiori beads coming from Murano are the most famous in the world and each is unique. Artists are making magnificent Murano bracelets today by combining millefiori beads with beads made using different techniques.
Blown Beads
Blown or lampwork technique allows glass artists to blow Hot Glass canes, to produce very interesting hollow beads of different sizes and colors. Each bead has to be made by hand and is a piece of art in its own right. Contemporary glass artists combine blown beads with precious metals or other kinds of beads to make magnificent murano bracelets.
While glass making techniques invented in Murano are now copied all over the world, many jewelry artists are importing glass beads from Murano. Murano glass bracelets combine a tradition of perfection, centuries old skills and Italian artistic flair.
